Why is Tutoring so Expensive?
The investment you make isn't just for an hour of time; it’s for access to a truly premium, verifiable level of expertise that goes way beyond standard tutoring. Think of it as investing in your student's future success, backed by serious qualifications:
I hold two first-class university degrees, so you can be confident that the knowledge base is deep and rock-solid.
With over eight years of teaching experience and serving as an experienced examiner, I know the exam process inside and out. The content is reliable, highly strategic, and precisely targeted at the most challenging questions. My consistent, excellent reviews speak for themselves here. I have 115 5* reviews as of December 2025!
A significant part of the fee covers the considerable, non-contact time I spend developing and maintaining entirely personalised lesson materials and custom plans, which are unique to your student's specific needs and learning style.
Thanks to my additional counselling qualifications, I can act as a valuable mentor. This means I can support my students' emotional well-being and confidence alongside their academic progress, which is crucial for learners at every level and background.
A portion of the hourly fee covers my tax, National Insurance, business insurance, my enhanced DBS certificate to work with children, and the continual cost of professional development (CPD)—all the expenses that a self-employed professional must cover to remain certified and operating legally.
Why do you still charge if I cancel a lesson or if the student is sick?
I understand entirely why you might question why the fee applies to the scheduled time, even if you cannot attend. The clearest answer is that the charge is fundamentally for the exclusive reservation of a professional slot, rather than just the 60 minutes of teaching.
This policy is rooted in the economic reality of operating a professional service and is standard business practice, whether in sports clubs, medical practices, or tuition. When you book a lesson, that specific hour is instantly blocked out in my schedule and cannot be offered to any other student. If the slot is missed, that earning potential for that specific hour is permanently lost to my business.
Furthermore, my overheads, which include venue costs, electricity, internet connection, two student debts to provide my expertise, Zoom fees, insurance, professional subscriptions, and the preparation time spent specifically tailoring the materials for your child/ren, are fixed. These costs remain constant whether or not the lesson is attended.
In essence, you are paying to guarantee the availability of a highly skilled professional at a precise time, along with the custom curriculum planning that occurs outside the lesson. Maintaining this commitment and professional sustainability means I must charge for the reservation, as the entire framework of the service depends on that dedicated time slot being secure.
My Commitment to Flexibility and Continued Learning:
Swapping Slots: I will always endeavour to provide a swap if another suitable slot is available in the timetable. However, please note that due to high demand and the fixed nature of my schedule, this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed.
Missed Session Value: Should your student be unable to attend the reserved time, I will ensure the learning remains consistent. I will send over all the personalised lesson materials and an audio summary for your student to review at a later time, ensuring the week's learning progression is not lost. This has worked brilliantly in the 3 years I’ve been doing this.
